. here's a guy four years ago john mccain was saying chuck hagel would make a great secretary of state. bill crystal was saying eight years ago chuck hagel should be vice president of the united states. if ronald reagan or george bush or mitt romney nominated chuck hagel, they would be saying he's a republican! he's a conservative. he's a war hero! he's one of ours but barack obama nominates him and right away, they're trying to bring him down. >> i found it amazing that, of all the people to come out and say they had reservations and concerns about chuck hagel, john mccain was leading that argument. i can almost understand some of the guys who have just -- are not -- haven't been in the congress or haven't been in the senate that long but john mccain's been here long enough. he knows better. >> bill: if anybody is a blood brother to chuck hagel, it's john mccain. but there's a total smear campaign. two issues. let's deal with them quickly. one, they say he's anti-israel. baloney! you look at his votes. that's what counts. he voted for billions of billions of dollars of military aid to

is going to have an easier fight. but there are questions about it. i mean, john mccain who was tortured himself when he was a p.o.w., has raised real questions about brennan's role in the bush administration supporting enhanced interrogation. today, he put out a statement saying he wanted to know, quote, what role he played in the so-called enhanced interrogation progras while serving at the cia during the last administration. i would also point out, wolf, that john mccain is on the same side as the liberal civil rights group the aclu in this. they are raising the same kinds of questions. even though in the past, brennan has said that he opposes these enhanced interrogation techniques. >> we'll watch these confirmation hearings every step of the way. >> should be interesting, both of them. >> low flying helicopters have people in some of the country's biggest cities asking questions. the answers have to do with preparations for a possible terrorist attack. using radioactive dirty bombs. >>> plus, before we get to that, we have some new details emerging about the colorado theater shootin

something else coming up. he really ticked off a lot of his fellow republicans. john mccain who once said he would make a great secretary of state now thinks he's not such a great idea. come on. this is pure politics. it is ridiculous. but it's the world that we now live in. >> john: trisha, why do republicans hate one of their own this much? because he was right about the iraq war? >> the question -- there used to be an idea about the party line but i had no idea that this line was basically something that you could choke yourself on immediately if you strayed a quarter inch from it. i think a lot of it is about what has taken hold among the prominent members of the republican party going against democrats, in particular, against obama, is their primary job. of course, that's not true. and that's what happens when -- this is the kind of outcome you get when that's the political drive. people should be punished for that kind of political partisanship because it hurts everyone involved. i'm actually -- i think if he's going to go outside of the sort of liberal core of his philosophy, he shoul

the answers that he and his republican colleagues, kelly ayotte, john mccain have been pushing for from clinton from the obama administration and the attacks on benghazi last september. so there is already quite a bit of republican opposition growing for that nomination. the aclu's weighed in as well. there are a number of groups who are being very strong in that opposition. >> peter: you've got the republicans who are -- they have a problem with the techniques that brennan put in place while serving for the president that those same republicans supported. and the same ideas that they supported. >> funny how that works, isn't it? >> peter: weird. >> it is going to be something if republicans are going to fight a nominee they'll have to pick one and coordinate. honestly, i don't see a filibuster for any of these nominees at this point. >> peter: it also strikes me as the definition of playing politics when you take a completely separate issue and you say well, like lindsey graham is doing. i'm going to hold these nomination up until i get my answers on this totally separate thing. i don'

like john mccain, and the idea is you have to continue to invest in a country because we invested all this blood and treasure for all of these years, and it would be wasted. that was the logic of vietnam as well. you can sustain trying to build a nation that many empires have tried and failed before to do so. it's not about karzai anymore. it's not actually about al qaeda. it's not really even about the taliban. it's about pride. it's about the mistakes that have been made and the lives that have been lost. how do you best honor that? >> yeah. >> gail, stay with us, if you can. >>> up next, a preview of "meet the press" with david gregory and "the washington post's" eugene robinson. first bill karins with a check on the forecast. >> we're having our father/son powwow. barnicle is going to control the weather maps. we're going to do the rooerever. >> i'm a high-pressure area. >> yes, you are, hothead. you have to go a little slower. we're confusing people. now we're on saturday already. let's just start with your weekend forecast. you can't go back. that's the problem. foreca as far as
